Spynlab Spin Ball

A white ball in flight tells you nothing. Heavy topspin, a float serve, sidespin that came off the bat at the wrong angle — from behind the table they all look the same.

This one shows you. Twenty-four matte-black dots, ten large and fourteen small, are arranged so that no two orientations of the ball look alike. Film a serve in slow motion and the pattern plays the rotation back to you: where the axis points, how fast the ball turns, how much a change in bat angle actually moved it.

The layout was solved, not sketched. From every direction you can look at the ball there are at least five dots in view — eight on average — so there is no angle where the pattern disappears. And the gaps between dots are wide enough, 11.6° of arc at the narrowest, that they stay separate instead of smearing together once the ball is moving.

Underneath the markings it is an ordinary 40+ ball: same size, same bounce, same feel off the bat as the rest of your basket.
